When one family member has schizophrenia or another serious mental illness, the entire family suffers.
Dear Representative ___________,
Please support HR 2646 the “Helping Families in Mental Health Crisis Act” introduced in Congress last week by Representatives Tim Murphy (R-PA) and Eddie Bernice Johnson (D-TX).
Families of people with serious mental illness like schizophrenia, schizoaffective disorder and bi-polar disorder are struggling to care for their loved ones. Many people with these illnesses do not realize that they are ill, and often refuse treatment. To prevent senseless tragedies, we need to have the Assisted Outpatient Treatment programs that are supported by this bill, as well as expanded inpatient care and other features. These treatments will pay for themselves through fewer ER visits, less violence and a reduction in expensive and sometimes violent police intervention .
Over the past 50 years, state and federal support for mental illness treatment programs have been steadily eroded. We need to reverse the endless cuts in services and do what needs to be done to protect not only the person who is ill, but also their families and the community at large.
I am a citizen in your district and I vote. I support passage of this bill, and I urge you to do so, also.
